The Coriano’s Castle was severely damaged during the last world war. Nowadays you could only admire some walls, the outer door and the inside one, which still manage to be exciting.
There no many official documents about the origin of this castle, but its presence was already reported during the 1200. In the early decades of the fourteenth century, it was conquered by the feudal dynasty, the Malatesta. In this period, the Malatesta family built many veritable fortresses not only in Coriano, but also along the Rimini’s surroundings.
Coriano, set in the Marano Valley, was often the focus of disputes and conflicts over the centuries. The Sassatelli family received this castle as a gift from Pope Clement VII in 1528, after the Malatesta’s defeat. Despite the short rule of Sassatelli in Coriano, lasted only fifty years, on the entrance arch you will still find their coat of arms depicting three silver mounts with the mount bracket, the highest, topped with a silver heart and the others two are surmounted by a golden lily, framed by a crown with three pearl rosettes and two points.
Thanks to the recent renovation, completed in 2000 which brought to light the moat, in a house in the Castle was made the Malatesta Antiquarian, a small collection permanent museum that showcases the various ceramic artifacts found during archaeological excavations on this territory.
During the Middle Ages, along the territory of Coriano there were many castles. The oldest is surely the Possano Castle; unfortunately, today this castle is almost nothing, since the remains of the foundations and walls of the bases have been incorporated into new buildings. The other castles, which had a similar fate to Possano castle, were all placed along the Vecciano area.
Not far from this area you will find a nice farmhouse, The Valley of the Hare (Via Cà Righetti 17, tel. 0541 656 464) that produces a precious oil, fine wine and even honey and jams. Try it!
