Maiolo is a small mountain village situated along the Valmarecchia hills. Until 1700, the old Maiolo, which corresponds to the current Maioletto name, was a populated and flourishing country. The first reliable information about its origins date back to the thirteenth century when Maiolo was a possession of the Papal States, in 1400 it passed under the role of the Malatesta Lordship and then of the Dukes of Urbino. Just under this Lordship Maiolo became a fundamental outpost for the control of the territory; there was in fact an impregnable quadrilateral fortress equipped with towers and massive walls. The country was built on a conical and isolated hill, surrounded by sheer cliffs and deep ravines. Under the Dukes of Urbino, Maiolo enjoyed a both commercial and prosperity. Currently, of the ancient fortified village, Maioletto, there are only two massive polygonal towers, from which you can enjoy a panorama of extraordinary beauty that spans the entire valley. The current village is sistuated along the area called SerraMaiolo has retaining their strong identity tied to the old farm houses, lively squares and ovens, maintaining a rural lifestyle that is its real strength. Its most famous product is the bread made by the local flours only and by the traditional furnaces methods of this area, the bread represents a so important tradition that it was dedicated also a museum, the Bread Museum, and every year in late June, you will find the Feast of Bread. A visit to this country will not forget the extraordinary beauty of the environment, a unique vantage point of the Marche and Montefeltro.
