The Fountain of Fortune of Fano dominates the center of the beautiful Piazza XX Settembre, the heart of the ancient nobility of Fano in the Middle Ages. On the square overlooks the impressive fourteenth century Podesta Palace – that has now lent its front to the Theatre of Fortune – and the Civic Tower rebuilt on the original. The octagonal basin of the Fountain of Fortune, built in 1576, adorns the square, that, with its large and distinctive colored marble basin which was completely renovated between 1697 and 1699 by the Venetian Ludovico Torresini, has always been a center of civic life and business of the country. The original of the charming bronze statuette of the Goddess Fortuna, modeled and cast in 1593 by Donnino Ambrosi of Urbino, is kept in the Civic Museum of Fano, and was replaced by a faithful copy. Considered as a civic symbol, the Fountain of Fortune in his forms recalls the elegant Mannerist sculptures by Giambologna.
