Sant’Agata Feltria is a very old town which is located on the border between Le Marche and Emilia Romagna, and has the scent of Tuscany. Situated at the foot of one of the most enchanting places in the valley, Mount Ercole, Sant’Agata Feltria was inhabited before Ancient Roman times by the Umbri Sarsinati; over the centuries it became the feud of various noble families who brought to Sant’Agata Feltria the elegance and good taste of the Court of Urbino and, moreover, gave the name to the Fort that overlooks the village. There are many things to see in this small and picturesque town which retains its medieval feel in its layout and in the various places of great historical value, including the Convent and the Church of San Girolamo, and the impressive Angelo Mariani Theatre, one of the oldest theatres in Italy, which is found in the Palazzone, also the Town Hall. There are also many contemporary things to see and the ‘sentiero delle fontane’ (fountain trail) is an excellent way of exploring the streets of Sant’Agata. The surroundings are also very beautiful; you can get a taste of the Middle Ages in Petrella Guidi, with its narrow alleys and the old church of Sant’Apollinaire; or, just outside town, there is the Santuario delle Vergine del Soccorso, with its spiritual atmosphere and scenic setting. Thanks to its lush, green setting, Sant’Agata Feltria is the perfect place for walking, horse-riding and cycling. Food is also important in the town, which has a Festival of the Prized White Truffle and agro-woodland-pastoral products, one of the most important of its kind in Italy held every year on each Sunday in October. It is an excellent occasion to taste this highly prized product prepared in all manner of ways! In addition to the truffle, however, Sant’Agata Feltria is also a land of mushrooms, honey, chestnuts and the products of local shepherds and farms. Another prized product is the formaggio di fossa, or “pit cheese”, which is celebrated in November with a festival during which are reopened the old pits where the cheese is still matured. In December, Sant’Agata Feltria becomes a “Christmas town” with bagpipe music, a Father Christmas grotto, elves, slides, reindeer and many other surprises. Basically, there is never a bad time or excuse for not visiting this beautiful town!
