The Port of Cattolica embodies the heart of Cattolica history, since ancient times, which is also expressed in the symbolic decorations on the boats, like the eyes of Cubia – current emblem of Cattolica – that reflects the ancient tradition (common even among the Greeks , Romans and Egyptians) to paint concentric circles similar to eyes around the hole through which runs the anchor of the boats, just the Cubia. To this superstitious symbol was attributed the power to guide the ships without losing the route and even today it is found painted on various boats in the Port of Cattolica, but it is also found in Sicily and in other foreign countries. This small port that for natural conformation, protected from the hill of Gabicce, seems to play a smaller scale of Ancona Port, was also highly desirable from the Archbishop of Ravenna, which favored the development of Cattolica during the Middle Ages, and from the Dukedom of Urbino. The Port of Cattolica grew significantly in the Middle Ages, representing a major hub for trade; from here sailed out the fruits of the countryside and inland crafts and here arrived wares of distant places and vessels which activity satisfied essentially the local needs. It was the lordship of Rimini to oppose the port activity of Cattolica, preventing the port from developing further, fearing negative repercussions for the development of trade passing through the port of Rimini. Currently, the Port of Cattolica is primarily a fishing-related port that supplies local markets, allocating only a few part of the catch to the international market. Perhaps for these reasons and the fresh fish always available, there are in town excellent seafood restaurants, like the Trattoria del Porto da Eugenio (Via Antonini 7, phone 0541 831 587) which overlooks the square where there is a beautiful fountain in the shape of the sail boat designed by water jets; the sea appetizers here are a real tribute to the Adriatic, and always fresh pasta dishes such as ricotta cheese gnocchi with crayfish tails; but this is not the only restaurant, on the square overlooking the port there are number of restaurants and really no one is to discard. The choice is yours, the satisfaction is guaranteed.
