The Porta Maggiore of Fano, located near the Augustus Arch, was built in 1227during an extensive surgery to enlarge the city. Despite the strengthening works desired by Pandolfo III Malatesta, it suffered significant damage as a result of the assault in 1463 by the troops led by the Montefeltro Duke Federico. In 1464, Porta Maggiore was in fact fully restored thanks to the project of the Matteo Nuti architect, who also designed the imposing bastion that formed the core defensive on the left of Porta Maggiore.
After the restoration occurred in the early twentieth century, Porta Maggiore shows a dual access, the pedestrian one and the driveway access. Inside, in the open-air area, you could admire the ‘Roma Gardens‘, (better known as Pincio).
