Piazza delle Conserve in Cesenatico is the heart of the historic center of the town, not far from the Port by Leonardo. This is just around the ancient Fish Market, and the name derives from the presence of some ancient preserves, also known as ice chest, which were used for the conservation of fish and other foods, kept in the cold between layers of ice or compressed snow, collected during the winter, that within these buildings lasted for a long time. These progenitor of modern refrigerators are presented as a truncated cone-shaped wells, 6 meters deep on average, larger on top (about 8 meters in diameter), enclosed by low buildings with thick and sturdy walls, covered with tiled roofs or roofs made of thatch and sand. The preserves, present on the entire Adriatic coast during year 500, were used until the beginning of last century. It is expected that twenty of it were in Cesenatico, but there are only three left, recently recovered and carefully restored. Every morning at Piazza delle Conserve is a typical market of region farmers, while during the Christmas period, on the square, the famous Nativity of Cesenatico is set up, with life-size statues. In the summer the square comes alive with numerous events of various kinds, from classical music festival Notturni alle Conserve, to the Arts and Crafts and Flea Market that takes place every Monday evening.
